Description

in the last years, with the lower pings, aim-based maps, statistics, etc, the lightning gun weapon has been in #1 spot as the most powerful weapon. today, i dare to say that LG is too powerful in the hands of a lg-whore, wipping 200 200 in a couple of seconds. even more if the ping issue is considered. i believe the controversial antilag feature is so talked about mainly because of this overpowered weapon.

What i suggest to be implemented is, a tooglable option that cripples the lg power, either on damage done per hit, or increase the number of "shots" per second while lowers the damage for each hit. i suggest the tooglable option has these 2 options. In a nutshell:
  • option 1 - lower lg damage per hit to 70% of actual damage
  • option 2 - double the number of shots per second, while lowering damage for each hit by at least 50%

with an option like this, who knows, maybe we will agree on something that will make the game more fun to us all, proud qw'ers!

I don't think it's a good idea, nor necessary. Especially not with the introduction of antilag. I don't think the LG is to powerful, and I especially don't think its a good idea to change the gameplay now. It should have been done like 5+ years ago or something in that case. Thats my thoughts atleast.

a couple of notes regarding your comment:
  • your comment was also valid 5 years ago
  • it would only be a "gameplay change" if you activated the feature by toogling it
  • antilag in practice isn't a perfect solution, and i doubt it will ever be. still, its an improvement, without a doubt!

regarding the feature itself: we players are "formated" to expect x damage inflicted by lg. What im proposing is to provide an alternative to x. we may like it! we don't know until we try it. call it "experimental" feature, disabled by default ofc. i would like to try both ways. not dmm4, but casual ffa, duel, 2on2 and 4on4. i ask everyone to look beyond!

Lowering LG for the main game seems like a break from "classic" to something else. There are plenty of other games (CA,RA) that lower the lg damage, and i'm sure there could be a "weak lg" mode if someone wanted it, but I don't think the core elements of quake should be messed with, as its a slippery slope. It opens the barn door to "rockets would be better at x speed" or "the game moves too fast, lets slow down the players by y %"

Your debate is a masked debate about what should the QW scene try to achieve. The scene may want to "conserve and exploit" rock-solid 15 years old game (and I don't want to sound too negative here, it's a valid approach), in such case LG cannot change.

If it wants to do something about decreasing player base, LG, in my opinion, should be changed, as it is clearly putting off players of other FPS games (which is the main source for new QW players).

In other FPS games, things like this get changed, and not rarely. It causes some annoyance, but in the end everyone gets used to it.

23:39 <qqshka> this will never happen

I have to agree. We are not going to change QW gameplay any more than we already have, unless it's changing spawns somehow. Feel free to rape it on some other mod, but in KTX it will not happen.

I have to say that I understand all the arguments against this.
If we agree that it is overpowered (we aren't in 1999 anymore, now everyone has 1000hz mice, 120hz screens), we could do something about it.
this is why i suggested a toogable option, to enable or disable "crippled lg". It's not intrusive, would be off by default. ppl would enable it if they want.
maybe ppl got used to it, and liked it better than the original settings.
oh well *

I'm willing to give it a try on a test server to see how people would react to it if there is still any interest in this.
One option should be chosen though, since there are 2 in the body of that tracker and I am not in a good place to choose any of them, as my qw game sucks so bad anyway.

Poll people maybe, and come back with a single request and players willing to give it a shot and I will implement it for a test.

I've set up 2 ports for the test:

  • qw-dev.net:27501 for the LG lowered to 66% of its initial damage
  • qw-dev.net:27502 for the LG with a double rate of fire and lowered to 40% of its initial damage

Test as wanted, get players to try it out, report feedback here or link thread on qw.nu.

Port 27502 has been removed, option is not even too be considered (loss of too many ammo without benefit damage-wise).
Is anyone testing port 27501 or should I just reject and move on?
